York takes its name from Annie A. York Secord, a local schoolteacher who moved from Ontario to Alberta in 1889 to teach at Poplar Lake and then Namao. The boundaries of the community are at 50 Street and Manning Drive to the east, 137 Avenue to the south, 66 Street to the west, and 144 Avenue to the north. York was developed in the 1970s, though construction of York’s homes took place all the way through the 2000s. Most of the newer construction is higher-density, while many older homes are single-family detached houses. The population of York is 3,901, the majority of whom own their homes.

York is located very close to the Clareview LRT station, with the eastern half of the community easily within walking distance. The location of York also allows for easy access to Fort Saskatchewan and the Anthony Henday Drive ring road, as well as downtown Edmonton via Manning and Fort Road. Shopping conveniences near York include the Londonderry Mall immediately west and the Clareview Town Centre to the east, as well as the new Manning Town Centre a short drive further. Together, these shopping centres satisfy all regular needs, including grocery, convenience, food and coffee, clinics, cinemas, and much more. Within York itself, Manning Crossing provides a Safeway, food services, banking, thrift store, and carwash. Several parks and greenspaces exist within the community, including York Park, which offers a playground, sports facilities, spray park, and the Steele Heights Community League. York School is also located here, while St. Dominic Catholic Elementary School, JJ Bowlen Junior High School, and the large M.E. Lazerte High School are nearby.
