Whyte Ave is an historic area of south-central Edmonton, surrounding Whyte (82) Ave, roughly comprised of four communities: Garneau, Queen Alexandra, Ritchie, and Strathcona. The area’s boundaries are found around 76 Avenue to the south, the Mill Creek Ravine to the east, The North Saskatchewan River valley to the north, and the University of Alberta to the west around 112 Street. Much of this area was once the City of Strathcona, a rival to the City of Edmonton, until it amalgamated with Edmonton in 1912. As such, the city centre developed around what is now the intersection of Whyte Ave and Calgary Trail before 1910, and now, over 100 years later, the area maintains a vibrancy of use and life as an entertainment and shopping district. Housing through the area is mixed, with a large number of single-family detached homes away from the heart of Whyte Ave, and a tendency toward higher-density real estate nearer Whyte Ave, such as walk-up apartments and condo buildings. The total population of the Whyte Ave area is around 28,000.
Whyte Ave's location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of south and central Edmonton, as well as to the adjacent University of Alberta. It's also a quick commute to Nisku and the Edmonton International Airport. Residents are served by extensive shopping opportunities around Whyte Ave itself, as well as in the Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard corridor. A full range of grocery, drug stores, conveniences, restaurants, coffee shops, services, bars, entertainment, and much more are found in the area. There are several parks and green spaces around Whyte Ave, which often play host to festivals and events. The area also offers a wide variety of schools and churches. The Mill Creek Ravine and North Saskatchewan River valley also offer further recreational opportunities.
