Westwood was developed through the late 1940s into the 50s, almost entirely as single-family homes, and redevelopment continued in the 1960s with numerous walk-up apartments being built during this time. The residential units today are made up of around two-thirds low-rise apartments and condos and a little less than one-third single-family detached homes with some scattered duplexes. The population of Westwood is 3,117, with residents primarily being renters.

Many industrial employment areas throughout Edmonton and Sherwood Park are also easily accessible via the adjacent Yellowhead Trail. The community is reasonably walkable, and has excellent transit connections. There are numerous commercial amenities within Westwood or nearby, including the large Kingsway Mall and a host of community-level conveniences.
