Westmount is an affluent community in west central Edmonton, containing much of the High Street district around 124 Street and providing commuter connections between downtown and Edmonton's west end. The community's boundaries are formed by 111 Avenue to the north, and a strip of green space between 120 and 121 Streets to the east (until the very south end of the community, where the boundary comes west to 124 Street south of Stony Plain Road). A small portion of Westmount reaches the river valley here to the south, and the boundary then extends north and westward along the Groat Ravine, where Groat Road ascends into the north-west part of Westmount after crossing the North Saskatchewan River. This road forms the western boundary of Westmount. The community is likely named for an affluent community on the west island of Montreal.
Westmount's early development occurred as a result of a streetcar line extending from downtown and running north along 124 Street from Jasper Avenue to 110 Avenue. This streetcar operated from 1910 to 1947, and by the time it was abandoned, 124 Street was a well-established commercial strip. Meanwhile, residential development was taking place across Westmount, particularly in the western part of the community overlooking the Groat Ravine. The area grew a reputation as an attractive residential location for professionals, which still stands today. Early development was predominantly single-family detached homes, which today account for around 40% of the real estate in Westmount. Slow redevelopment and intensification have brought many low-rise apartments and condos, which are now nearly 50% of the residential units in Westmount. A further 10% of the homes for sale in Westmount are found in mid-rise buildings, while the remaining few homes are split between duplexes and scattered townhouses. The population of Westmount is 5,887, and the majority are long-term residents and homeowners, with a typical household income above the city-wide average.
Westmount's location provides easy access to downtown Edmonton, which is just a short drive or commute east, as well as to St. Albert, the University of Alberta, and Whyte Ave via Groat Road. Grant MacEwan University and NAIT are also easy to get to from Westmount. The community is quite walkable, and has good transit connections as well as bike lanes. Many commercial amenities, including community-level amenities, can be found along 124 Street, while further shopping can be found at Oliver Square and Brewery district, including groceries, drug stores, other big box stores, gyms, food options, and much more. Kingsway Mall and the commercial amenities of greater downtown Edmonton are also located nearby.
Westmount has no shortage of green spaces, as the southern half of the community borders the Groat Ravine and North Saskatchewan River valley. In this area, numerous multi-use trails will connect you to nature. Besides this, a green strip forms the eastern boundary of Westmount in the north, and the Westmount Park offers a playground and spray park, skating rink, sports fields, picnic facilities, the Westmount Fitness Club, a community garden, and Westmount Community Hall. Westglen School is also found here, as the only school within Westmount. However, several schools are close by the community, including Westmount School, Oliver School, Ross Shepard School, Coronation School, St. Vincent Catholic School, Westminster School, and Glenora School.
Places of worship in Westmount are; Golden Harvest Ministry, Temple Beth Ora Reform Synagogue, St. George's Greek Orthodox Church, St. Peter's Anglican Church, and the St. Benedict Anglican Roman Catholic Community. Further landmarks and places of interest within Westmount include the Sukyo Mahikari Centre for Spiritual Development, the High Street district's numerous art galleries, restaurants, coffee shops, and boutique stores, and The People's Lodge.
