Wellington takes its name from Arthur Wellesley (1769–1852), who was the first Duke of Wellington and who led the British victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. The boundaries of the community are at 137 Avenue to the north, 127 Street to the east, 132 Avenue to the south, and the rail tracks at 142 Street to the west. Development in Wellington took place mainly in the 1960s, though some construction continued through the next several decades. Wellington real estate is comprised primarily of single-family detached homes, though some townhouses and small apartment/condo buildings are also located here, as well as a few duplexes. The population of Wellington is 3,130, with most being long-term residents who own their homes.
Wellington’s location allows easy access to Yellowhead Trail, quickly connecting residents to other parts of Edmonton, including industrial employment areas. Downtown Edmonton is not a long drive, and St. Albert is also easy to get to via St. Albert Trail immediately west. Wellington’s shopping options include the large Skyview Power Centre immediately across 137 Avenue to the north, offering a range of grocery, big-box stores, food, and other stores and services, as well as a wide range of services at St. Albert Trail. Wellington is home to several churches, besides a host of churches in adjacent communities such as Calder and the Sikh and Hindu societies near St. Albert Trail. Whatever your creed, there is likely a faith community here for you. Wellington is dotted with numerous small parks and green spaces. A large park at the centre of the community contains the McArthur School and St. Angela Catholic School, as well as sports fields, a skating rink, large playground, and the Wellington Park Community League. Further schools are located in adjacent communities, including the Sir John Thompson School at 132 Avenue.
