University is an area of south-central Edmonton, surrounding the University of Alberta's North (main) and South campuses, roughly comprised of six communities: Belgravia, Garneau, Grandview Heights, McKernan, Parkallen, and Windsor Park. The area's boundaries are found around 62 Avenue to the south, 109 Street to the east, and the North Saskatchewan River valley to the north and west. Some of this area was once the City of Strathcona, until it amalgamated with Edmonton in 1912. The University of Alberta was founded in 1908, and is now home to around 39,000 students. It has one of the largest endowments in Canada, and is well-known for engineering, health sciences, and research efforts. The South Campus, previously known as University Farms, is the site of agricultural research, Foote Field, and the Saville Community Sports Centre. Whyte Ave, located just east of the University campus, is an entertainment and shopping district. Housing through the area is mixed, with a large number of single-family detached homes, and a tendency toward higher-density real estate nearer the University and major corridors, such as walk-up apartments and condo buildings. The total population of the University area is around 21,000.
University's location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of south and central Edmonton, and it's also a quick commute to Nisku and the Edmonton International Airport. LRT stations in the area connect the two portions of the University campuses to each other, as well as connecting the communities that make up the University area to downtown Edmonton. Residents are served by extensive shopping opportunities around the community itself, as well as nearby around Whyte Ave and the Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard corridor. A full range of grocery, drug stores, conveniences, restaurants, coffee shops, services, bars, entertainment, and much more are found in the area. There are several parks and green spaces around the various communities, and the area also offers a wide variety of schools and churches. The North Saskatchewan River valley also offers further recreational opportunities, including the Royal Mayfair Golf Club and Hawrelak Park, which often plays host to festivals and other events.
