The Meadows is an area plan in south-east Edmonton, comprised of seven communities: Aster, Larkspur, Laurel, Maple, Silver Berry, Tamarack, and Wild Rose. These are all named for trees, plants, and flowers native to Alberta. The area’s boundaries are found at the Anthony Henday Drive corridor to the south and east, Whitemud Drive to the north, and 34 Street to the west. The Meadows Area Structure Plan (ASP) was established in 2004, and development began soon after, with many communities still being developed today. Housing through the area is mixed, though heavy in single-family detached homes. Other real estate in The Meadows includes townhouses, duplexes, and low-rise condo buildings. The total population of The Meadows is over 35,000.
The Meadows' location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of south and east Edmonton via the adjacent Anthony Henday Drive ring road or Whitemud Drive, which open up easy access to services around Edmonton. The nearby Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard corridor also makes for a quick commute to downtown Edmonton and Whyte Ave, as well as Nisku and the Edmonton International Airport. Residents of the area are served by a large shopping centre along 17 Street in the northern part of the community, which offers a Superstore, Walmart, Home Depot, Winners, Best Buy, Staples, Michaels, banks, gyms, food options, coffee, and much more. There are numerous parks and green spaces spread throughout The Meadows, as well as small ponds and natural areas. The Mill Creek Ravine originates from The Meadows, and divides the Silver Berry and Wild Rose communities. The Meadows Recreation Centre offers many recreational opportunities, and the area also offers a wide variety of schools and churches.
