Terwillegar Towne is a community in south-west Edmonton. The community is named in honour of Dr. Norman L. Terwillegar, who was a prominent figure in the Edmonton medical community for over 35 years. The community's boundaries are found at Terwillegar Drive to the west, Rabbit Hill Road to the east, Thibault Wynd and Terwillegar Boulevard to the south, and 23 Avenue to the north. Development in Terwillegar Towne occurred beginning in the late 1990s, and continued into the 2000s. Housing is made up of more than 60% single-family detached homes, 20% row-housing, and a few duplexes, with the remaining housing being a combination of low- and mid-rise condo buildings with the Devonshire Long Term Care Centre. The population is 6,184, with the majority of Terwillegar Towne residents owning their homes.
Terwillegar Towne's location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of Edmonton via 23 Avenue. The Anthony Henday Drive ring road and Whitemud Drive, a short drive south and north respectively along Terwillegar Drive, open up easy access to services around Edmonton. Terwillegar Towne residents are served by amenities in a couple of different commercial sites within the community. The walkable Terwillegar Towne Centre offers Terwillegar Pharmacy, Laser & Style Services, Remedy Cafe, other eateries, and more. Leger Transit Centre, located on the north-east edge of the community, offers Petro-Canada Gas Station, BMO, more eateries, and other services. Further amenities can be found a short drive away at the Currents at Windermere which offers many of the larger commercial amenities. Terwillegar Towne was the first community in Edmonton to be planned and built on a neo-traditional design model of New Urbanism, and with this design, the main focus of Terwillegar Towne is on combining commercial uses with recreational areas. There are numerous green spaces spread throughout the community, including two small lakes and the centrally located Terwillegar Towne Neighbourhood Park, which is the placement of two brand new schools opening for the 2019-2020 school year: Esther Starkman School and Monsignor William Irwin Catholic School. The Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre in the adjacent community of Leger offers residents of Terwillegar Towne many recreational activities. Roadways and housing placements throughout Terwillegar Towne were designed strategically to encourage pedestrian usage and interaction throughout the community. Terwillegar Community Church is located in the community.
