Tawa, a community in south-east Edmonton, is near the heart of the Mill Woods area. Tawa means "you are welcome" in the Cree language. The area was the Cree Papaschase reserve early in Alberta's history, and many of the communities in Mill Woods are named to honour this. The boundaries of Tawa are found at 50 Street to the east, 34 Avenue to the north, 66 Street to the west, and 28 Avenue to the south. The adjacent community of Mill Woods Town Centre is an important focal point of commercial, social, and cultural activity in Mill Woods, with a large regional shopping centre, office developments, a city bus terminal, library, and more. The community of Tawa also serves as an extension of this, containing a further shopping plaza, the regional city police office, and the large Grey Nuns Community Hospital with attendant clinics and professional centres. The residential uses exist across the northern and eastern parts of the community, beginning construction in the 1990s and continuing into the 2000s. The real estate here is split evenly between duplexes, townhouses, low-rise apartments and condos, and mid-rise buildings. The population is 2,032, with the majority of Tawa residents owning their homes.
The location of Tawa allows for easy access to many industrial and commercial employment areas throughout south and east Edmonton, as well as easy transit access via the central Mill Woods bus terminal. Two LRT stations, at the west and south ends of the community, are scheduled to open in 2020. Residents of Tawa have easy access to the Mill Woods Town Centre shopping centre as well as an adjacent plaza within Tawa, which together offer a Co-op Foods, Shoppers Drug Mart, Canadian Tire, banks, food, and much more. Many further commercial amenities can be found nearby at South Edmonton Common. The main recreational focus of Tawa is a central park area, and a new residential development is being built next to this park. There are no schools within Tawa, however, numerous schools are located within adjacent communities.
A new plan for the adjacent Mill Woods Town Centre community proposes an extensive redevelopment of the western half of the community over time, to create more transit-oriented development around the new LRT station bordering Tawa. This will bring a pedestrian-focused complex of commercial amenities, green spaces, easily accessible bus stops, and approximately 1,750 more residential units closer to the LRT station.
