Strathcona Real Estate Listings
Strathcona is a community in south central Edmonton, wrapped around a bend in the North Saskatchewan River. The community’s boundaries are found at 107 Street to the west, 82 (Whyte) Avenue to the south, the Mill Creek Ravine to the east beyond 97 Street, and the North Saskatchewan River valley reaching all the way around to 98 Avenue to the north. The community of Strathcona, along with surrounding areas, existed as the City of Strathcona until it amalgamated with Edmonton in 1912, and is named for Lord Strathcona, governor of the Hudson Bay Company at the turn of the century and the man who drove the last spike of the CPR transcontinental railway. Since its early days as a commercial hub, the community has seen many changes. Most recently, Whyte Ave/Old Strathcona has seen rejuvenation as a trendy arts and entertainment district, maintaining its old-town vibe. Today, much of the residential use across the community is medium to higher density, though many old buildings and single-family detached homes still remain. These detached homes make up about 25% of Strathcona real estate. 45% of the dwellings are found in low-rise apartments and condos, while mid- to high-rise buildings, mostly overlooking the river valley, make up a further 20%. Some scattered duplexes and townhouses round out the homes for sale in Strathcona. The population is 8,973, with the majority of Strathcona residents being renters.
Strathcona’s location allows easy access to the adjacent University of Alberta and to the Whyte Ave district, and downtown Edmonton is just a short drive away. The community is highly walkable, with excellent transit connections including two LRT stations on the University campus, and bicycle lanes running throughout the community offer further commuting options. Shopping nearby includes the trendy area of Whyte Ave/Old Strathcona, which creates the southern border of the Strathcona community. This district offers standard conveniences such as grocery, drug stores, banks, and food options, as well as boutique stores, restaurants, bars, and more. Southgate Centre is found nearby, offering more stores and services, as well as greater downtown Edmonton, located immediately across the river.
Strathcona is overlooking the river, which offers a view, numerous multi-use trails, and the Kinsmen Sports Centre at the bottom of the valley. Around the sports centre, you'll also find the Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Pool, Kinsmen Pitch & Putt, John Walter Museum, and the Kinsmen Club. Besides this, the Mill Creek Ravine to the east of Strathcona provides ample walking and recreational opportunities, as well as a picnic area and the Mill Creek Outdoor Pool. Several small parks, gardens, plazas, and green spaces can also be found scattered throughout Strathcona. Two schools are located within Strathcona, the King Edward School with its Academy at King Edward, and Old Scona Academic. Other schools nearby include Garneau School, Queen Alexandra School, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, and McKernan School. Notable landmarks in Strathcona are; the Old Strathcona Farmers Market, an old streetcar line, the historic Connaught Armoury, a branch of the Edmonton Public Library, numerous theatres and performing arts centres, the Strathcona Community League, the Varscona Hotel on Whyte, Metterra Hotel on Whyte, the historic Strathcona Hotel and Dominion Hotel buildings, St. Anthony District Archives, Strathcona Baptist Church, Knox Evangelical Free Church, Edmonton Church of God, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Our Lady Queen of Poland Polish Roman Catholic Church, and Moravian Church.
