Spruce Avenue is a small oddly-shaped community in central Edmonton, keeping the original name of what is now known as 114 Avenue. The community’s boundaries are found around Kingsway, Princess Elizabeth Avenue, and 106 Street to the west, 97 Street to the east, 118 Avenue to the north, and 111 Avenue to the south. Spruce Avenue began development relatively early, with around one-third of the buildings completed by the end of the 1940s, and nearly all development completed by the 1980s. Spruce Avenue is made up of a wide range of housing types; single-family detached homes account for about half the community's real estate, while duplexes, fourplexes, townhouses, and low- and mid-rise apartments and condos account for much of the remainder. Some population is also counted in the CapitalCare Norwood and Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. The population of Spruce Avenue is 1,882, with residents split between homeowners and renters.
Spruce Avenue’s location allows easy access to NAIT, Grant MacEwan, and University of Alberta, and downtown Edmonton is also a short drive away. The community is highly walkable, and has excellent transit connections, including two LRT stations to the west and south of the community. There are numerous commercial amenities within Spruce Avenue or nearby, including the large Kingsway Mall and a host of community-level conveniences, as well as the commercial centres of greater downtown Edmonton. Spruce Avenue contains numerous green spaces, including a central park area with a playground, picnic facilities, skating rink, sports fields, and two schools; Spruce Avenue School and St. Basil Catholic School. Another school in the community is the Inner City High School, while Norwood School, Victoria School, St. Catherine Catholic Elementary/Junior High School, John A. McDougall School, and St. Joseph High School are found nearby. Other notable landmarks in Spruce Avenue include the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (adjacent to the Royal Alexandra Hospital), the Kingsway Mall, a large office of the Alberta Motor Association, Spruce Avenue Community Centre, and part of the NAIT campus.
