Southgate is an area of south Edmonton, surrounding the important Southgate Centre and LRT station, comprised of six communities: Empire Park, Lendrum Place, Malmo Plains, Pleasantview, Rideau Park, and Royal Gardens. The area’s boundaries are found at 40 Avenue to the south, Calgary Trail to the east, 63 Avenue to the north, and 119/122 Street to the west. Most of the communities in the Southgate area were developed in the 1960s and 70s, though much of Pleasantview was constructed earlier. The Southgate Centre mall itself opened in 1970, as Canada's largest shopping centre west of Toronto. It underwent a significant expansion in 2009, and the adjacent LRT station opened in 2010. Housing through the area is mixed, with a large number of single-family detached homes. Other real estate in Southgate includes townhouses and low- to mid-rise condo buildings, especially around major corridors. The total population of the Southgate area is just over 19,000.

Southgate's location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of south and west Edmonton via Whitemud Drive, which runs through the area just south of Southgate Centre and opens up easy access to services around Edmonton. It's also a quick commute into downtown Edmonton or to Nisku and the Edmonton International Airport. Besides the Southgate Centre and adjacent plaza, which offer a range of stores and services including grocery, food, fashion, and department stores, residents of the area are also served by Whitemud Crossing and the commercial amenities of the Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard corridor. Other scattered convenience plazas around Southgate bring local amenities. There are numerous parks and green spaces spread throughout Southgate, and the area also offers a wide variety of schools and churches.
