South Terwillegar is a community in south-west Edmonton, named in honour of Dr. Norman L. Terwillegar, who was a prominent figure in the Edmonton medical community for over 35 years. The community's boundaries are found at Terwillegar Drive to the west, Rabbit Hill Road to the east, the neighbouring community of Terwillegar Towne to the north at Terwillegar Boulevard, and the Anthony Henday Drive corridor to the south. Development in South Terwillegar began early in the 2000s, continuing into the 2010s. Housing is made up of a broad mix, with nearly 50% being single-family detached homes, 15% row-housing, and a few duplexes, with the remaining real estate being a combination of low- and mid-rise condo buildings. The population is 8,577, with the majority of South Terwillegar residents owning their homes.
South Terwillegar's location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of Edmonton via 23 Avenue. The Anthony Henday Drive ring road and Whitemud Drive, a short drive south and north respectively, open up easy access to services around Edmonton. South Terwillegar residents are served by amenities in two commercial sites to the north and south of the community. The walkable Terwillegar Towne Centre offers a pharmacy, liquor store, eateries, coffee, and more. Further amenities can be found a short drive away at the Currents at Windermere which offers many of the larger commercial amenities. Terwillegar Towne, to the north, was the first community in Edmonton to be planned and built on a neo-traditional design model of New Urbanism. South Terwillegar extends this design focus, combining commercial uses with recreational areas. Roadways and housing placements throughout South Terwillegar were designed strategically to encourage pedestrian usage and interaction throughout the community. There are numerous green spaces spread throughout South Terwillegar, including several small ponds and two centrally located park areas, which offer playgrounds, sports fields, and more, with multi-use trails interconnecting different parts of the community into Terwillegar Towne. Nellie Carlson School, Esther Starkman School, and Monsignor William Irwin Catholic School are located in adjacent communities, and the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre nearby offers residents of the area many recreational activities.
