Sherbrooke was likely named after Sir John Coape Sherbrooke, who was the lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia in 1811 and the governor-in-chief of British North America in 1816. Sherbrooke is bounded by St. Albert Trail to the west, Yellowhead Trail to the east, 127 Street to the east, and 118 Avenue to the south. Sherbrooke, developed mainly through the 1950s, has the distinction of being one of North America’s first communities planned under the “neighbourhood unit” strategy, along with its neighbouring communities of Dovercourt and Prince Charles. This strategy aims to create functional, self-contained and desirable communities, and became the prevalent development strategy in Edmonton during the following decades. Around two-thirds of the community’s properties are single-family detached homes, with the remainder being townhouses, apartments, and condos. Dovercourt has a population of 2,593, with the majority being homeowners and long-term residents.
Sherbrooke is located just northwest of downtown Edmonton, allowing for a quick commute, while the adjacent Yellowhead Trail connects residents with various industrial employment areas across Edmonton. Within Sherbrooke, the Aurora School and and St. Pius X School provide educational needs for your children. At the centre of the community, Sherbrooke Spray Park, Sherbrooke Community League, and adjacent sports facilities provide for recreational needs. Numerous convenience uses exist around the intersection of 118 Avenue and St. Albert Trail, offering gas, coffee, a pharmacy, liquor store, and more.
