Schonsee’s name is derived from the German words for “beautiful lake”, following the general naming pattern of the Lake District. The boundaries of Schonsee are formed by 153 Avenue to the south, 66 Street to the east, 82 Street to the west, and the adjacent community of Crystallina Nera to the north at around 175 Avenue. Schonsee’s development began in the 2000s, continuing today. The neighbourhood is almost fully residential, with around half today being single-family detached homes with the remainder being duplexes, row houses, and condos, though more condo development is planned or underway. Schonsee’s population is 2,829, and the majority own their homes.
Schonsee’s location allows easy access to the Anthony Henday Drive ring road and to Yellowhead Trail, offering quick commutes to many areas such as St Albert, Sherwood Park, downtown Edmonton, and CFB Edmonton at Namao. The community of Schonsee contains two lakes and a green space. Londonderry Mall is a short drive south, while further shopping is available to the west at 97 Street in Eaux Claires, providing a Sobeys, Save-On-Foods, Canadian Tire, Lowe’s, banks, clinics, and numerous other shops and services. St. John Bosco School and Florence Hallock School are both located nearby.
