Sakaw, which means "wooded area" in the Cree language, is a small community in south-east Edmonton, named for the groves of trees that stood on the rolling farmland of Mill Woods. The community’s boundaries are found at 66 Street to the west, 50 Street to the east, Mill Woods Road S to the north, and the Anthony Henday Drive ring road to the south. An arterial roadway bisects Sakaw and offers residents easy access to city bus services. Development in Sakaw began in 1977, with residential housing mostly being constructed by the end of the decade, while mid- and higher-density housing and commercial development continued into the 1980s and 1990s. Housing here is made up of 70% single-family detached homes, with the remainder being row-housing and duplexes and a small number of low-rise apartments scattered throughout. The population is 3,984, with Sakaw residents split between homeowners and renters.

Sakaw's location allows easy access to commercial employment opportunities in the close-by Mill Woods Town Centre, as well as access to many industrial employment areas throughout south and east Edmonton, and the Anthony Henday Drive ring road via 50 Street. Sakaw does not have many local businesses, but residents are serviced by the adjacent Millhurst Shopping Centre, which offers a Shell, a barber shop and more. Mill Woods Town Centre, which offers Co-op Foods, Shoppers Drug Mart, Millwoods Registry Services, multiple restaurants, banks and numerous other food, stores, and services is a short drive north on 66 Street. A branch of the Edmonton Public Library is also located here. Many further commercial amenities can be found nearby at South Edmonton Common. The Grey Nuns Community Hospital is just north of Mill Woods Town Centre in the community of Tawa. Sakaw was designed with a number of strategically placed pathways, including a park-like pipeline right-of-way, in order to promote pedestrian and bicycle travel within the neighbourhood. Sakaw Park, located centrally, offers residents a playground, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, a basketball court and more, including the only school in the neighbourhood; Sakaw School. St. Mary & St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church is located within the community.
