Rutherford is a community in far south-west Edmonton, within the Heritage Valley area. The community is named for Alexander Cameron Rutherford, who was the first premier of Alberta and instrumental in the construction of the University of Alberta. Rutherford's boundaries are found at the Heritage Valley Town Centre around 22 Avenue SW to the south, 127 Street to the west, Ellerslie Road to the north, and James Mowatt Trail to the east. The community was developed beginning in the 2000s, continuing into the 2010s. Nearly half of the real estate here is made up of single-family detached homes, with a further 30% found in low-rise condos. Most of the remainder of homes in Rutherford are made up of duplexes, with a few townhouses. The population is 10,843, with the majority of Rutherford residents being homeowners.
Rutherford's location allows easy access across south and east Edmonton via the nearby Anthony Henday Drive ring road, and Calgary Trail also provides a quick commute to Nisku, Leduc, and the Edmonton International Airport. Many commercial amenities are found nearby, including within and adjacent to the community of Rutherford around the intersection of Ellerslie Road and James Mowatt Trail. Here, you'll find a Sobeys, Save-On-Foods, Shoppers Drug Mart, eateries, banks, and more. The Heritage Valley Town Centre is located to the south of Rutherford and offers more big-box stores and other conveniences. Currents at Windermere or South Edmonton Common are also located nearby. Extensive green space exists within Rutherford, beginning with tree stands and ponds scattered throughout the community, extending along a multi-use trail which cuts through most of the community diagonally, and ending with parks surrounding the community's two schools, Johnny Bright School and Monsignor Fee Otterson Elementary/Junior High School. One of these parks, Alexander Rutherford Park, offers an extensive playground, picnic facilities, and sports fields. Roberta MacAdams School is located immediately across James Mowatt Trail.
