Rossdale is a community in central Edmonton, named for Donald Ross, who built a hotel in the area in 1876. The community’s boundaries are found at 106 Street to the west, the North Saskatchewan River to the south and east, and 97 Avenue and Rossdale Road to the north. Rossdale is one of Edmonton's oldest inner-city communities, beginning development well before 1900. Two fur trading posts were located here in the early 19th century, and Ross Flats was home to several major businesses by the end of the century, including an ice house, brewery, lumber yard, power plant, and coal mine. Today, the community is a mix of residential use and green space. The residential units in Rossdale are roughly one-third single-family detached homes and one-third low-rise apartments and condos, while the remainder is mainly split between townhouses and mid-rise buildings. The population of Rossdale is 862, with the majority of residents being homeowners.
Rossdale’s location allows easy access to NAIT, Grant MacEwan, University of Alberta, and Concordia University, while downtown Edmonton is also just a short drive or walk away. The community is quite walkable, and has excellent transit connections, including several LRT stations near Rossdale. There are numerous commercial amenities near Rossdale, including the large Kingsway Mall, Whyte Ave, and the commercial centres of greater downtown Edmonton. Rossdale contains several parks and green spaces, most notably Rossdale Park and Irene Parlby Park, both located on the banks of the river. Extensive multi-use trails extend through Rossdale and along the river. The large Legislature grounds are also located just west of Rossdale. The community has no schools, though Centre High and Grandin School are both located near Rossdale. Other notable landmarks in Rossdale include RE/MAX Field, Diamond Park, and the historic Rossdale Brewery, Donald Ross School, and Ross Flats Apartments.
