Ritchie is a community in south central Edmonton, named for Robert Ritchie, former mayor of the Town of Strathcona and owner of the Ritchie Mill. The community is bordered to the east by the southern part of the Mill Creek Ravine. Other boundaries of the community include 82 (Whyte) Avenue to the north, 100 Street to the west, and 72 Avenue to the south. A small extension to the community, largely commercial in use, continues west as far as 102 Street in the blocks south of Whyte Ave. Construction began here as early as the 1890s, continuing into the 1950s. Even beyond this time, some redevelopment and infill construction has continued. Around half of the real estate in Ritchie is comprised of single-family detached homes, a further 30% of low-rise apartments and condos, and the remainder a diverse mix of duplexes, fourplexes, townhouses, and mid-rise buildings. The population is 3,979, with the majority of Ritchie residents being homeowners.
Ritchie’s location allows easy access to downtown Edmonton and the University of Alberta, as well as the trendy Whyte Ave/Old Strathcona district extending west from Ritchie's northwest corner. Other parts of south Edmonton are also a short drive away, including industrial employment areas through south and east Edmonton. The community is highly walkable, with good transit connections. Many commercial amenities can be found nearby, whether at the nearby Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre or in local community-level convenience plazas, as well as around Whyte Ave and in the greater downtown area. In the heart of Ritchie, along 76 Avenue, numerous businesses provide further services. Ritchie ends against green space to the east, which extends into the Mill Creek Ravine. Multi-use trails can be found here, continuing deep into the ravine. The Mill Creek Outdoor Pool is located just across 82 Avenue. Meanwhile, Ritchie Park, located centrally, is a more typical city park, offering sports fields, picnic facilities, a playground, and the Ritchie Community League. École Joseph-Moreau and Mill Creek School are located within Ritchie, while Hazeldean School, J.H. Picard School, and St. Margaret Center for Diverse Learning are located in adjacent Hazeldean.
