Rhatigan Ridge is a small community in south-west Edmonton. The community is named in honour of Thomas Rhatigan, a farmer who became famous locally for the high quality of wheat and oats he produced. The community’s boundaries are found at Terwillegar Drive to the east, Rabbit Hill Road to the south, the North Saskatchewan River valley to the west, and the neighbouring community of Ramsay Heights to the north around 40 Avenue. Riverbend Road bisects Rhatigan Ridge north and south, offering residents easy access to city bus services and the Whitemud Freeway. Development in Rhatigan Ridge occurred during the 1980s. Housing here is made up of 90% single-family detached homes, with the remaining dwellings being multi-family housing structures including row-housing and a few duplexes scattered throughout. Housing styles range from large luxury homes on spacious lots, especially along the river valley, to more modest executive-style housing. The population is 3,077, with the vast majority of Rhatigan Ridge residents owning their homes.
Rhatigan Ridge's location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of Edmonton via the Whitemud Freeway. Easy access to the Anthony Henday Drive ring road via Terwillegar Drive south opens up easy access around Edmonton. Rhatigan Ridge residents are served by local businesses in the Terwillegar Heights Shopping Centre, which offers an Esso gas station, various clinics, eateries, and more. Many further amenities can be found in either direction via Whitemud Drive, and at the nearby Currents at Windermere which offers Walmart, Cabela's, Home Depot, Safeway, Cineplex Odeon, multiple restaurants, banks and numerous other stores, services, and more. The original design of the Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights area, including Rhatigan Ridge, was intended to be, in many respects, self-contained. Rhatigan Ridge was designed with a number of strategically placed pathways in order to promote pedestrian and bicycle travel within the community. The centrally located Thomas Rhatigan Park, which offers residents St. Mary Catholic School, Earl Buxton School, Riverbend Playschool, playgrounds, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, and other sports fields, is one of three parks in the community. Ronning Street Neighbourhood Park and Mary Lobay Park are the others. Just to the south of Riverbend Road, residents can find a high point of land that offers a panoramic view of Edmonton. Easy access to the river valley park trails and Fort Edmonton Park, just to the north, give Rhatigan Ridge a unique feel and a lot of opportunities to be outdoors. The Riverbend Community League and Riverbend Lutheran Church are located in the community.
