Queen Alexandra is a community in south central Edmonton, named for the wife of King Edward VII of England. The community’s boundaries are found at 109 Street to the west, 82 (Whyte) Avenue to the north, Calgary Trail to the east, and 67 Avenue to the south. Much of the land north of University Avenue was developed from 1900-1920, while much of the land south of University Avenue was only developed beginning in the 1940s. The community today is made up of around 30% single-family detached homes and over 50% low-rise apartments and condos, mostly located in the north part of the community nearest Whyte Ave. The remainder of the real estate in Queen Alexandra is split between duplexes and mid-rise buildings. The population is 5,158, with the majority of Queen Alexandra residents being renters.
Queen Alexandra’s location allows easy access to the adjacent University of Alberta and to Whyte Ave, and downtown Edmonton is just a short drive away. The community is highly walkable, with excellent transit connections, and bicycle lanes throughout the community offer further commuting options. Shopping options nearby include the trendy area of Whyte Ave/Old Strathcona, partly spread across the north edge of Queen Alexandra. This district offers standard conveniences such as grocery, drug stores, banks, and food options, as well as boutique stores, restaurants, bars, and more. The nearby Southgate Centre offers more stores and services, and there are further local conveniences located along the Calgary Trail corridor. Numerous parks and green spaces are found within Queen Alexandra, with playgrounds, sports fields, picnic facilities, a skating rink, and the Queen Alexandra Community League. Three schools are located within Queen Alexandra; Strathcona School, Queen Alexandra School, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel School. Other notable landmarks in Queen Alexandra include Ronald McDonald House, Tipton Arena, George S. Hughes South Side Arena, Scona Pool, the Strathcona Place retirement home, St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, the Mormon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Evangelical Fellowship Church, Strathcona Community Church, Calvary Lutheran Church, Sharon Gospel Chapel, St. Basil Ukrainian Catholic Parish, and several professional buildings and clinics.
