Oxford is named for the Oxford House, an early trading post of the Hudson’s Bay Company. Oxford is part of The Palisades area plan within Castledowns. The boundaries of the neighbourhood are formed by 167 and 153 Avenues to the north and south, 127 Street to the east, and the adjacent community of Carlton to the west at 133 Street. Oxford has been developing since the 1980s, with the northern third of the neighbourhood built after 2010. The neighbourhood is primarily made up of single-family homes, with a few small duplex, row house, and condo complexes scattered throughout. The population of Oxford is 4,038, with a large portion of long-term residents, young families, and near-80% home ownership.
Oxford’s location offers easy access to the Anthony Henday Drive ring road just north on 127 Street, to St Albert, and to CFB Edmonton at Namao. Its proximity to west Edmonton and the Yellowhead also makes Oxford convenient for those who work in west Edmonton’s industrial areas. Oxford contains a lake and a large park, Oxford Park, with a playground and sports fields. There is also a green space running across Oxford further north with protected wetlands. Shopping is available adjacent to both the north and south ends of Oxford, offering a Walmart, Save-On-Foods, Sobeys, Shoppers Drug Mart, restaurants, banks, and numerous other stores and services. The large Elizabeth Finch School is located in the adjacent community of Carlton.
