Ottewell is a community in South Central Edmonton, named for the Ottowell family, some of the first to settle on the south side of the North Saskatchewan River in 1881. The community’s boundaries are found at 50 Street to the east, 98 Avenue and Terrace Road to the north, 75 Street to the west, and 90 Avenue to the south. The community was developed in the 1950s and 60s, and is made up of around 75% single-family detached homes, with a few scattered duplexes. Low-rise apartments and condos comprise the rest of the residential property in Ottewell. The population is 5,729, with Ottewell residents mostly being homeowners.
Ottewell’s location allows easy access to downtown Edmonton, located across the river to the west, Concordia University, and the University of Alberta, as well as the trendy Whyte Ave/Old Strathcona district. Many commercial amenities can be found nearby, whether at the nearby Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre or at Capilano Mall in the north-east corner of Ottewell, as well as around Whyte Ave and in the greater downtown area. Ottewell has numerous parks, mostly located around its many schools. These parks together offer playgrounds, a splash park, sports fields, a skating rink, and the Ottewell Community League. Ottewell School, Clara Tyner School, The Waldorf Independent School of Edmonton, St. Brendan Catholic School, Gabriela Mistral Latin American School, and Austin O'Brien High School are all located within Ottewell.
