Ormsby Place is a large community in west Edmonton, named for A.W. Ormsby, who introduced Edmonton’s grid system of numbered streets and avenues. He was superintendent of the electric light department for 20 years and City Commissioner from 1918-1920. The community’s boundaries are found at 178 Street to the east, the Anthony Henday Drive corridor to the west, Callingwood Road to the south, and 69 Avenue to the north. Ormsby Place was developed beginning through the 1970s and 80s and continuing into the 2000s, and a little more than 50% of Ormsby Place is made up of single-family detached homes. Nearly 40% of the community is made up of townhouses, with a few scattered duplexes and low-rise apartment buildings. The population of Ormsby Place is 5,364, and the majority of the residents are homeowners.
Ormsby Place’s location allows easy access to many industrial employment areas throughout the west end, the nearby West Edmonton Mall, and many other parts of west and south Edmonton via Whitemud Drive and the Anthony Henday Drive ring road. Many commercial amenities, besides those at West Edmonton Mall, can be found across 178 Street at The Marketplace at Callingwood. Here, you’ll find a Safeway, Liquor Depot, Shoppers Drug Mart, a farmer’s market, convenience, food, banks, and numerous other stores and services. There are three park areas found within the community. The largest, Willowby Park, offers a playground, sports fields, picnic facilities, a skating rink, the Willowby Community League, and Ormsby School. Misercordia Community Hospital is located nearby on 87 Avenue.
