Montrose is named after the Marquis of Montrose, a celebrated Scottish hero famous for opposing forced Presbyterianism upon the Scottish people by English rule. The community is bounded by Yellowhead Trail to the north, the LRT tracks around Wayne Gretzky Drive to the west, 118 Avenue to the south, and 58 Street to the east. Development in Montrose occurred in the 1950s and 60s, with single-family detached and semi-detached homes throughout most of the community. Surrounding the major arteries at the boundaries of Montrose, you’ll also find some small condo buildings. In the west part of Montrose near Wayne Gretzky Drive the uses are primarily commercial, surrounding the old Northlands Coliseum and the intersections with Yellowhead Trail. Montrose’s population is 3,309, with a high proportion of long-term residents who own their homes.

Montrose’s location near Yellowhead Trail allows easy access to other parts of the city, including many industrial employment areas, and downtown Edmonton is just a short drive. Residents also enjoy good access to other destinations within the city via the nearby Coliseum LRT station. The Montrose community features several parks, schools, religious facilities, sports centres, and commercial services, all creating a complete community. Montrose Park is the home of the Montrose Community League, and the spray park and playground are rated one of the best in the city. The Russ Barnes Arena, North Edmonton Gymnastics Club, and Jing Ying Martial Arts are also located in Montrose, while the Eastglen Leisure Centre with its saltwater pool and the Thistle Curling Club are located in Bellevue, just across 118 Avenue to the south. Montrose School and Ben Calf Robe Elementary School are within Montrose, while St. Leo Catholic School, Highlands School, and Eastglen School are all immediately adjacent to Newton.
