McLeod is named after Murdoch McLeod, an early pioneer who arrived in Canada from Scotland after signing on with the Hudson Bay Company in 1861. The community’s boundaries are formed by 144 Avenue to the south, 66 Street to the west, and 153 Avenue to the north. The eastern boundary of McLeod is located where it meets the adjacent community of Casselman around 58 Street. McLeod’s development occurred throughout the 1950s and 60s, continuing until the 80s. The homes for sale in McLeod are entirely single-family detached homes, and most are bungalows with large yards. The population of McLeod is 2,226, and the vast majority have been long-term residents who own their homes.
McLeod is perfectly located to access various parts of north-east Edmonton, including Manning, Eaux Claires, Londonderry, and Northgate. Downtown Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan are also within an easy driving distance, and the Clareview LRT station is nearby. Shopping in the area includes Londonderry Mall and Manning Crossing. The large McLeod Park is home to ball diamonds, a playground, skating rinks, the McLeod Community League, and several schools: McLeod School, Steele Heights School, St. Dominic Catholic Elementary, and JJ Bowlen Junior High School. Edmonton Christian Northeast School and M.E. LaZerte High School are both near McLeod as well. McLeod’s churches are the Steele Heights Baptist Church and St. Dominic Savio Roman Catholic Church, while the Emmanuel Community Church, North Edmonton Alliance Church, St. Michael & All Angels Anglican Church, and Emmaus Lutheran Church are all located very close by.
