McConachie Area is named for Grant McConachie, a long-time Edmonton resident who was a bush pilot and went on to become president of Canadian Pacific Airlines. This follows the general naming pattern of the Pilot Sound area of northeast Edmonton. The McConachie Area community is bounded by the Anthony Henday ring road to the north, 55 Street to the east, 167 Ave to the south, and 66 Street to the west. Development in McConachie occurred throughout the 2000s and continues today, with a mixture of residence types. More than half is made up of single-family detached homes, and the remainder is made up of various-sized condo buildings, townhouses, and duplexes. The population of the McConachie Area is 4,941, with the majority owning their homes and a large proportion of young families.
The location of the McConachie Area is perfect for access to the Anthony Henday Drive, which offers easy access to St Albert, Sherwood Park, CFB Edmonton at Namao, and other parts of the city. The McConachie Area community is designed with a network of parks, green spaces, tree stands, and multi-use trails connecting them all. A large park at the east edge of the community contains the Christ the King Elementary school, with more schools planned here and in the centre of the McConachie Area. Also planned are a community league and further recreational space. Immediately south and east of McConachie Area along 167 Avenue, a variety of amenities including a Save-On-Foods, Sobeys, Petro-Canada, Shoppers Drug Mart, Pet Valu, a gym, a branch of the Edmonton Public Library, banks, and other stores and services are easily accessible. A new shopping plaza at 66 Street in the west part of the community also includes a Tim Hortons, a pharmacy, and other conveniences.
