McCauley is a community in east central Edmonton, named for Matthew McCauley, Edmonton’s first mayor. The community’s boundaries are found at 101 Street to the west, the LRT tracks to the south and east, and 111/112 Avenue to the north. McCauley is one of Edmonton's oldest inner-city communities, beginning development before 1900. The community's area is split between commercial, light industrial, and residential uses. The residential units are comprised of 40% single-family detached homes and nearly 30% low-rise apartments and condos, with the remainder split between mid-rise apartments and duplexes with a few scattered townhouses. The population of McCauley is 4,799, with residents primarily being renters.
McCauley’s location allows easy access to NAIT, Grant MacEwan, University of Alberta, and Concordia University, while downtown Edmonton is also just a short drive or walk away. The community is highly walkable, and has excellent transit connections, including several LRT stations surrounding McCauley. There are numerous commercial amenities within McCauley or nearby, including the large Kingsway Mall and the commercial centres of greater downtown Edmonton. Numerous community-level conveniences are located within the community, on 95 and 97 Streets. McCauley contains several parks and green spaces, most notably a central park area with a playground, picnic facilities, and sports fields. There is also a skating rink nearby. McCauley has only two limited schools, McCauley School and Sacred Heart School. Meanwhile, St. Theresa of Calcutta Elementary School, Inner City High School, and Victoria School are all located around the perimeter of McCauley. Other notable landmarks in McCauley include the large Commonwealth Stadium, Clarke Stadium, the Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre, the Ukrainian Canadian Archives and Museum, Little Italy (95 Street), Chinatown (97 Street), a host of churches, and the McCauley Community Centre.
