Mayliewan is named after the Cantonese word for “beautiful bay”, following the naming pattern of the Lake District. The community is bounded by 167 and 153 Avenues to the north and south, 82 Street to the west, and the adjacent community of Ozerna to the east beginning at around 73 Street. Mayliewan was developed beginning in the 1980s, though the majority of the construction occurred in the 1990s continuing into the 2000s. The community of Mayliewan is primarily residential, with a small commercial service area at the west edge of the community. The homes here are almost entirely single-family detached, with a few duplexes throughout. Mayliewan’s 4,053 residents are of various demographics, and the majority own their homes.

Mayliewan is located with easy access to downtown Edmonton via 82 Avenue, as well as the Anthony Henday Drive to the north, offering access to St Albert, Sherwood Park, and CFB Edmonton at Namao. The community is built around an interconnected system of parks, lakes, trails, and the St. John Bosco School. Shopping is available to the west at 97 Street in Eaux Claires, providing a Sobeys, Save-On-Foods, Canadian Tire, Lowe’s, banks, clinics, and numerous other shops and services, while the commercial plazas at 82 Street contain a bank, a convenience store, and several other services.
