Mattson is part of the larger Decoteau area plan in far south-east Edmonton, which will eventually be broken into smaller communities as it is developed. The community's boundaries are found at 50 Street to the east, 25 Avenue SW to the north, 66 Street to the west, and 41 Avenue SW to the south. The Area Structure Plan (ASP) for Decoteau was approved in 2015, with a constituent Neighbourhood Structure Plan (NSP) drafted for Mattson in 2019. This NSP deals with the lands of the Mattson community itself, guiding its future development. Mattson is planned to be comprised mostly of low-density residential uses such as single-family detached homes, with a commercial area and extensive green spaces and natural areas.

The broader Decoteau area will include plenty of parks, schools, and community facilities, with a broad mix of housing types. The greater Summerside area to the north and west already provides numerous schools, including Jan Reimer School, Shauna May Seneca School, Corpus Christi School, and Michael Strembitsky School. As Mattson develops, connections to the rest of the city are provided by the Anthony Henday Drive ring road to the north and Calgary Trail to the west, accessible via Ellerslie Road and 41 Avenue SW. This provides easy access to Nisku, Leduc, and the Edmonton International Airport. 50 Street, at the east edge of Mattson, provides a quick commute to Beaumont.
