MacTaggart is a community in south-west Edmonton, named for Sandy Auld Mactaggart, a local entrepreneur and philanthropist with provincial, national, and international achievements in business, arts, and education. The community's boundaries are found at the Whitemud Creek Ravine to the east, Rabbit Hill Road to the west, the neighbouring community of Magrath Heights to the north beyond MacNeil Way, and the Anthony Henday Drive corridor to the south. Development in MacTaggart began in the 2000s, continuing into the 2010s. Housing is made up of a broad mix, with roughly 40% being single-family detached homes, 55% split between low- and mid-rise condo buildings, and the remaining real estate being a combination of duplexes and townhouses. The population is 2,117, with the majority of MacTaggart residents owning their homes.
MacTaggart's location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of Edmonton via 23 Avenue. The Anthony Henday Drive ring road and Whitemud Drive, a short drive south and north respectively, open up easy access to services around Edmonton. MacTaggart residents are served by amenities in two commercial sites to the north and south of the community. A small plaza in the southern part of the community offers a Shoppers Drug Mart, restaurants, coffee, and other stores and services, while an abundance of commercial development around the intersection of 23 Avenue and Rabbit Hill Road provides a Save-On-Foods, another Shoppers Drug Mart, gyms, banks, food options, and much more. Further amenities can be found a short drive away at the Currents at Windermere, which offers many of the larger commercial amenities. Roadways and housing placements throughout MacTaggart were designed strategically to encourage pedestrian and bicycle usage throughout the community and extending into adjacent communities. There are numerous green spaces spread throughout MacTaggart, including several small ponds and two park areas, which offer a playground, sports fields, and more, with multi-use trails continuing through the community and beyond. The Whitemud Creek Ravine, which encloses much of the eastern part of MacTaggart, also offers abundant outdoor recreation opportunities in the form of walking trails and sanctuaries. Nellie Carlson School is within MacTaggart, while Esther Starkman School and Monsignor William Irwin Catholic School are located in adjacent communities, and the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre nearby offers residents of the area many recreational activities.
