Lorelei is named for a castle on the Rhine river in Germany, following the naming pattern of the Castledowns area. The boundaries of the neighbourhood are formed by Castle Downs Road to the north and west, 97 Street to the east, and the adjacent community of Beaumaris to the south at around 160 Avenue and Beaumaris Road. Development in Lorelei occurred throughout the 1970s and 80s. Lorelei is primarily residential, with row houses and small apartments scattered among 60% single family homes. The population of Lorelei is 4,134, and the majority own their homes.
Lorelei is located along 97 Street, offering easy access to the Anthony Henday Drive, CFB Edmonton at Namao, Yellowhead Trail, and downtown Edmonton. The community of Lorelei contains a large park with several schools surrounding it. Other green spaces within the neighbourhood lead into this park, with paths and trails. The schools are the Mary Butterworth School, Lorelei School, and Ecole Bishop Savaryn Catholic School. Adjacent to Lorelei across 97 Street, the Eaux Claires shopping centre offers a Sobeys, Save-On-Foods, No Frills, Shoppers Drug Mart, Canadian Tire, Lowes, banks, food options, clinics, and numerous other stores and services. The Northwest Pentecostal Assembly, Good Shepherd Anglican Church, and Castledowns Baptist Church are all located in adjacent neighbourhoods.
