Laurel is a community in south-east Edmonton, whose name refers to the laurel leaf willow growing in the area. This follows the general botanical naming pattern of The Meadows area. The community's boundaries are found at 23 Avenue to the north, 17 Street to the east, Anthony Henday Drive to the south, and 34 Street to the west.
Laurel's development plan was approved in 2006, and the community's development began soon after. It has continued throughout the 2010s, though much is still to be constructed. Laurel homes for sale will mainly be single-family detached homes, which make up around half the residential units in the community. 25% is made up of low-rise condo buildings, 15% of duplexes, and the remainder of real estate in Laurel is made up of townhouses. The population of Laurel at the 2016 census was 7,051, and the majority of residents are homeowners, with a high proportion of young families.
Laurel’s location allows easy access to south Edmonton especially, but also other parts of the city's outskirts, via the adjacent Anthony Henday Drive ring road. This offers Laurel residents easy connections to various employment areas across south, west, and east Edmonton, Sherwood Park, and Nisku. The Edmonton International Airport is also a short drive away. Laurel offers good transit connections, including the nearby Millwoods LRT stations scheduled to open in 2020. Many commercial amenities can be found nearby, including at RioCan Meadows and Tamarack, as well as South Edmonton Common. A local convenience plaza to the south also offers a Save-On-Foods, Shoppers Drug Mart, banks, food, and much more. The Meadows Community Recreation Centre is located just a little north on 17 Street.
The community contains extensive green space, including a large pipeline right-of-way, offering multi-use trails which extend throughout the rest of Laurel. Three lakes are surrounded by homes and trails, and park areas offer further recreational opportunities. The only school in the community so far is Svend Hansen School, with another school planned. Daly Grove School, Pollard Meadows Elementary School, T.D. Baker School, Crawford Plains School, and Bisset School are located in adjacent communities. Meadowlands Baptist Church, Millwoods Community Church, and the Catholic Church of Corpus Christi are located nearby.
