Lauderdale is named after James Lauder, originally from Scotland, who farmed and owned land near the Lauderdale neighbourhood before the turn of the century, and opened a bakery in 1885. The community’s boundaries are formed by 132 and 127 Avenues to the north and south and 97 and 113a Streets to the east and west. Lauderdale’s development took place from the 1950s through the 60s, with a wide mix of housing types. Around 50% of Lauderdale real estate is made up of single-family detached homes, with the remainder evenly split between duplexes, townhouses, and small apartment and condo buildings. 2,909 residents live in Lauderdale, with roughly half-and-half owning vs. renting their homes.
Lauderdale’s location allows quick, easy access to various parts of Edmonton via Yellowhead Trail, as well as to downtown Edmonton via 97 Street. A full range of shopping convenience is found around the intersection of 97 Street and 137 Avenue, a little to the north of Lauderdale, with a T&T Supermarket, Safeway, Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart, London Drugs, Indigo, banks, food, coffee, and many other stores and services located in Northgate Centre, North Town Centre, and the surrounding areas. The Grand Trunk Fitness and Leisure Centre is located in Lauderdale, providing an arena, tennis courts, fitness centre, pool, and a large park with a variety of sports fields. Besides this area, several other parks and greenspaces are located in other parts of the community, including an off-leash dog park with a horseshoe pitch, and the Lauderdale Community League with its attached playground and further sports facilities. The Al Rashid Islamic Mosque is located in Lauderdale, as well as the First United Pentecostal, Serbian Orthodox, St. Emeric Hungarian Roman Catholic Church, and True Jesus Church. Numerous other churches are located in adjacent Calder and beyond. Lauderdale’s schools are Ecole Pere Lacombe and Lauderdale School.
