Larkspur is a community in south-east Edmonton, named for an ornamental wildflower plant, following the naming pattern of The Meadows area. The community’s boundaries are found at Whitemud Drive to the north, 17 Street to the east, 38 Avenue to the south, and 34 Street to the west. The community was developed beginning in the 1980s and continuing into the 2000s, and the residential use is mixed; around two-thirds of the real estate here is single-family detached homes, 10% is comprised of duplexes, and the remainder is found in low-rise apartments and condos. The population is 5,114, with Larkspur residents mostly being homeowners.
Larkspur’s location allows easy access to south Edmonton via the adjacent Whitemud Drive, as well as the entire outskirts of the city via the nearby Anthony Henday Drive ring road. This connects Larkspur residents to many employment areas across south and east Edmonton as well as Sherwood Park. Many commercial amenities are found nearby, whether within Larkspur at RioCan Meadows, at Tamarack, or at South Edmonton Common or Southgate Centre. Along a pipeline corridor, multi-use trails lead to other adjacent communities and connect to a central park, Larkspur Park. This park offers sports fields, picnic facilities, a playground, a skating rink, and the Velma E. Baker School. A small lake lies just west of the park.
