Lake District is an area plan in north-east Edmonton, comprised of eight communities: Belle Rive, Crystallina Nera, Eaux Claires, Klarvatten, Lago Lindo, Mayliewan, Ozerna, and Schonsee. Each of these is named for a lake in the old countries of Europe, or for a lake's reference in another language. The area’s boundaries are found at 153 Avenue to the south, 97 Street to the west, the Anthony Henday Drive corridor to the north, and 66 Street to the east. The Edmonton North Area Structure Plan (ASP) was approved in 1979, and development in some parts of the Lake District began in the 1980s, continuing into the 90s. Other communities in the northern part of Lake District developed beginning in the 90s or 2000s. Housing through the area is mixed, though heavy in single-family detached homes. Other real estate in Lake District, especially in newer communities, includes townhouses and low-rise condo buildings. The south-western part of Lake District is commercial, and there are other convenience plazas also scattered around the area. The total population of Lake District is more than 29,000.
Lake District's location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of north and east Edmonton via the nearby Anthony Henday Drive ring road, which opens up easy access to services around Edmonton. 97 Street and 82 Street also offer quick commutes into downtown Edmonton. Lake District residents are served by a large shopping plaza at 97 Street, in Eaux Claires, which offers a Sobeys, Save-On-Foods, No Frills, Shoppers Drug Mart, Lowe's, Canadian Tire, banks, restaurants, coffee, and other stores and services. Several small plazas within the communities of Lake District also provide local conveniences, while Northgate Centre, Londonderry Mall, and the Manning Town Centre are also found nearby. There are numerous parks and green spaces spread throughout Lake District, as well as countless small lakes and ponds. The area also offers a wide variety of schools and churches.
