Kirkness is a community in northeast Edmonton, named for James Kirkness, who came to Canada from Scotland in 1866. He worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company until 1881, when he retired to his homestead in River Lot 26. The community’s boundaries are found at the train tracks around 38 Street to the west, 144 Avenue to the south, 153 Avenue to the north, and Victoria Trail to the east. Development in Kirkness has occurred since the 1970s and 80s, with some development continuing today. Around 50% of Kirkness real estate is made up of single-family detached homes, while the remainder is made up of scattered condo buildings, townhouses, and duplexes. Kirkness’s population is 3,987, with most residents owning their homes.
Kirkness’s location allows easy access to other parts of the city via Yellowhead Trail and Anthony Henday Drive ring road, including many industrial employment areas, and downtown Edmonton is also easily accessible via the nearby Clareview LRT station. Many commercial amenities can be found along 137 Avenue, within the Clareview Town Centre, or at Manning Town Centre on 153 Avenue. Further community-level services, such as a Sobeys, drug store, gas, and food options, are immediately south of Kirkness along Victoria Trail. Located centrally is Kirkness Park, offering a playground and sports fields, along with the adjacent Kirkness School. The large Clareview Community Recreation Centre and a branch of the Edmonton Public Library are adjacent to Kirkness.
