Killarney’s name was taken from a town in Ireland, as were other communities in northeast Edmonton, including Kildare, Kilkenny, and Londonderry. The boundaries of Killarney are 132 and 127 Avenues to the north and south and 97 and 82 Streets to the west and east. Killarney’s development occurred throughout the 1950s and 60s, with a diverse mix of housing types. Around a third of the community’s real estate is single-family detached homes, and the remainder is an even split between apartments, townhouses, and duplexes. There are commercial strips within Killarney at both the east and west sides along 82 and 97 Streets. The population of Killarney is 4,352, with more renting than owning their homes.
Killarney’s location is perfect for access to downtown Edmonton and to other parts of Edmonton via the Yellowhead Trail, located immediately south. There are numerous parks and green spaces scattered throughout Killarney, many adjacent to the community’s schools: Killarney School, Queen Elizabeth School, Mee-Yah-Noh School, and St. Matthew Catholic Elementary. Archbishop O’Leary Catholic High School and St. Cecilia Junior High are located immediately across 132 Avenue. St. Constantine Romanian Orthodox Church, Edmonton Living Fountain Christian Alliance, St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church, and Church of the Holy City are all located within Killarney, while Northgate Baptist, Disciples Church, and Pilgrim United are nearby.
