Kernohan is a community in northeast Edmonton, named after James Kernohan, who was an early pioneer farmer and coal miner. In 1884, Kernohan came with his family to Alberta from Ontario. He operated a grocery store through the late 19th century. The community’s boundaries are at the river valley to the east, the Kennedale Ravine around 130 Avenue to the south, 137 Avenue to the north, and Victoria Trail to the west. Most of the development in the community took place throughout the late 1970s, with most of the residences being rowhouses or semi-detached developments. The remainder of the homes here are single-family detached houses. Kernohan’s population is 2,992, with the majority of residents owning their homes.
Kernohan’s location allows easy access to other parts of the city via Yellowhead Trail, including many industrial employment areas, and to Sherwood Park. Many commercial amenities can be found along 50 Street and 137 Avenue, within the Clareview Town Centre a little west of Belmont. Community-level services, such as a Sobeys, drug store, gas, and food options, are also within the north-east corner of adjacent Belmont, across Victoria Trail. Kernohan Park is located centrally, offering a playground and sports fields, with the Anne Fitzgerald Catholic School also located on the park. The large Hermitage Park is located in the river valley, where you’ll find a stocked trout pond, meandering trails around several small lakes, picnic facilities, and a dog park.
