Holyrood is a large community in south central Edmonton, likely taking its name from the Holyrood Abbey in Scotland. In the past, the community has also been known as Mount Pleasant, East Edmonton Gardens, and Balmoral. The community’s boundaries are found at 75 to the east, 98 Avenue to the north, 85 Street to the west, and 90 Avenue to the south. The community was developed primarily in the 1950s. Holyrood real estate is made up of around two-thirds single-family detached homes, while the remainder is split between scattered duplexes, townhouses, and low- to mid-rise apartments and condos. The population is 3,419, with the majority of Holyrood residents being homeowners.
Holyrood’s location allows easy access to downtown Edmonton, located just across the river to the west, Concordia University, and the University of Alberta, as well as the trendy Whyte Ave/Old Strathcona district. An LRT station is scheduled to open in 2020. Many commercial amenities can be found nearby, whether at the nearby Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre or in local community-level convenience plazas, as well as around Whyte Ave and in the greater downtown area. Besides some small “pocket parks”, Holyrood has a large central park area, offering a playground, sports fields, picnic facilities, and a skating rink. Holyrood Community League, the South East Edmonton Seniors Association, and Holyrood School are also located here. Further schools nearby include École Gabrielle-Roy, Vimy Ridge Academy School, Ottewell School, Clara Tyner School, and The Waldorf Independent School of Edmonton.
