The community’s boundaries are found at 67 Street to the west, 118 Avenue to the north, 50 Street to the east, and Ada Boulevard overlooking the river valley to the south. Highlands began development as early as 1911, with construction progressing through the 1940s and 50s. The vast majority of residences in the community, around 85%, are single-family detached homes. The remainder of Highlands real estate is made up of a few scattered duplexes and low-rise apartments. The population of Highlands is 2,545, with residents primarily being homeowners.
Highlands’s location allows easy access to NAIT, Grant MacEwan, and University of Alberta, while downtown Edmonton is also just a short drive away. Concordia University is located immediately across Wayne Gretzky Drive. The community has good transit connections, including an LRT station just a little north-west of Highlands. There are numerous commercial amenities near Highlands, including the large Kingsway Mall and the commercial centres of greater downtown Edmonton, as well as the community-level services and conveniences along the 118 Avenue corridor. Further shopping can be found a short drive north on 50 Street. Highlands's green space includes the river valley overlook, as well as a central park area with playground and picnic facilities. Located in the nearby Virginia Park community is the large Borden Park, offering a playground, sports fields, picnic facilities, gardens, and tennis courts. The only schools in Highlands are Highlands School and Mt. Royal School, though Eastglen School, Ben Calf Robe/St. Clare School, St. Leo Catholic School, and Newton School are also found nearby.
