Groat Estates is a prestigious, historic urban community in central Edmonton, named for Malcolm Groat, who was a Hudson's Bay Company employee and once owned the lands in this area after settling in Edmonton. The community is comprised of a small portion of what is now the official community of Westmount, and is bounded by 124 Street to the east, 107 Avenue to the north, and the Groat Ravine to the south-west. The community's land was annexed to Edmonton in two parts, in 1904 and 1910, and development began soon after. A streetcar line, built along 124 Street in 1910, helped spur development here. The commercial strip along 124 Street quickly took shape, and the areas to the west, overlooking the Groat Ravine, became attractive for professionals and wealthier people. Today, many historic homes still stand in the area, which now boasts a wide mix of architectural styles and housing types, though larger, more prestigious single-family homes still dominate Groat Estates. Some condo buildings and walk-up apartments do exist toward the southern end, around Jasper Avenue, and around 124 Street and Stony Plain Road.
Groat Estates' location allows easy access to downtown Edmonton, Grant MacEwan University, the University of Alberta, and to the historic Whyte Ave. Residents are served by shopping opportunities along 124 Street, at Oliver Square and the Brewery District, and on Jasper Avenue. Together, these areas offer several grocery stores, drug stores, gyms, specialty stores, restaurants, coffee shops, and much more. Also nearby are Kingsway Mall, Whyte Ave, and downtown Edmonton, which each offer far more shopping options. There is a small park with a playground in the northern part of Groat Estates, and the Groat Ravine offers plenty of green space for the many residences backing onto it. In general, the sidewalks here are quiet, with mature trees enclosing the streets. Nearby schools include Westglen School, Oliver School, Glenora Elementary School, Westminster School, and St. Vincent Catholic School.
