Griesbach is named for Major-General William Antrobus Griesbach, a veteran of the Boer War and World War I and Edmonton’s youngest mayor in 1907. The community is a former military base, as part of CFB Griesbach, which is being entirely redeveloped as a residential community beginning in the mid-2000s and continuing today. Griesbach forms a large square, bounded by 153 and 137 Avenues to the north and south, Castle Downs Road to the west, and 97 Street to the east. The community is a mix of single-family detached homes, row houses, duplexes, and condo buildings. Griesbach’s population, as of 2016, was 4,714. The majority own their homes, and there is a wide range of household incomes.
Griesbach is ideally located for an easy commute to downtown Edmonton, and is also located with quick access to Yellowhead Trail, CFB Edmonton at Namao, and the Anthony Henday Drive. Griesbach is built around a large park in the centre, with several other small parks, lakes, and other green spaces scattered throughout. Major General Griesbach School lies inside the community, with further schools planned, while three schools are located in adjacent Caernarvon to the west. The south-east corner of Griesbach is a commercial area, with numerous restaurants, a Shoppers Drug Mart, and a Fairfield Inn. Across 97 Street are the North Town Centre and Northgate Centre, with numerous stores and every convenience.
