Garneau is a community in south central Edmonton, named for Laurence Garneau, an early settler in the area. The community’s boundaries are found at the University of Alberta campus around 111 and 112 Streets to the west, 82 (Whyte) Avenue and University Avenue to the south, 107 and 109 Streets to the east, and the North Saskatchewan River valley at Saskatchewan Drive to the north. Garneau was originally part of the city of Strathcona, and was already fully developed when Strathcona was amalgamated into Edmonton in 1912. A high degree of redevelopment has occurred since this time, with intensification especially around the University uses. Today, only a little more than 10% of the residences in Garneau are single-family detached homes, while mid- and high-rise apartments and condos account for more than 50%. The remaining residences are mostly low-rise buildings and student housing. The population is 9,790, with the majority of Garneau residents being renters.

Garneau’s location allows easy access to the adjacent University of Alberta and to Whyte Ave, and downtown Edmonton is just a short drive away. The community is highly walkable, with excellent transit connections including two LRT stations on the University campus, and bicycle lanes running throughout the community offer further commuting options. Shopping nearby includes the trendy area of Whyte Ave/Old Strathcona, partly contained in the south-east part of Garneau. This district offers standard conveniences such as grocery, drug stores, banks, and food options, as well as boutique stores, restaurants, bars, and more. Further, Garneau itself features a strip of commercial uses on 109 Street near the High Level Bridge. The nearby Southgate Centre offers more stores and services, as well as greater downtown Edmonton, located immediately across the river. Garneau is overlooking the river, which offers a view, numerous multi-use trails, and the Kinsmen Sports Centre at the bottom of the valley. Around the sports centre, you'll also find the Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Pool, Kinsmen Pitch & Putt, John Walter Museum, and the Kinsmen Club. Besides this, you'll also find some small park areas within Garneau.

One school is located within Garneau, the Garneau School. Other schools nearby include Queen Alexandra School, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, King Edward Elementary School, Windsor Park School, and McKernan School. Notable landmarks in Garneau are; Garneau Tennis and Beach Volleyball Club, Campus Tower Suite Hotel, Campus Community Garden, several fraternities and sororities, the City Arts Centre, the MCE Mosque, Garneau United Church, The Garneau, and Metro Cinema.
