Ekota, which means "special place", is a small community in south-east Edmonton, within Mill Woods. The community’s boundaries are found at Mill Woods Road to the west, 66 Street to the east, 23 Avenue to the north, and Mill Woods Road South to the south. Knottwood Road bisects Ekota and offers residents easy access to city bus services. Ekota was originally developed in the 1970s, and is made up of 60% single-detached homes and 25% row housing, with the remainder being low-rise apartments and a few scattered duplexes. The population is 2,415, with Ekota residents split between homeowners and renters.

Ekota's location allows easy access to commercial employment opportunities in the neighbouring Mill Woods Town Centre and industrial employment throughout south and east Edmonton. Transit connections are also good, with a major bus terminal located beside the Mill Woods Town Centre and an LRT station is scheduled to open in 2020. The adjacent Mill Woods Park offers the residents of Ekota access to the Mill Woods Recreation Centre, Mill Woods Farmers' Market, the Community Recycling Depot, the Mill Woods Skate Park, track fields, a football field, and more. Commercial amenities can be found at the adjacent Mill Woods Town Centre, which offers Co-op Foods, Shoppers Drug Mart, Millwoods Registry Services, multiple restaurants, banks and numerous other food options, stores, services and more. A branch of the Edmonton Public Library is located here. Many further commercial amenities can be found nearby at South Edmonton Common, and The Grey Nuns Community Hospital is a short drive away in the community of Tawa. Ekota is one of 3 communities that comprise the Knottwood Community League, founded in 1977, and the community was designed with two community parks. Ekota Park, located centrally, offers residents a playground, skating rink, soccer fields and Ekota School. Father Ivor Daniel Park, named in honour of Father Ivor J.E. Daniel, a Catholic priest who ministered in Edmonton, British Columbia, England, and Wales, is located in the southwestern corner of the neighbourhood and offers St Clement Elementary/Junior High School, a playground, baseball diamonds, and more.
