Dovercourt was likely named after Dovercourt Village in Essex, England. The boundaries of this northwest Edmonton community are found at 142 Street to the west, Yellowhead Trail to the north, St. Albert Trail to the east, and 118 Avenue to the south. Dovercourt, developed mainly through the 1950s, has the distinction of being one of North America’s first communities planned under the “neighbourhood unit” strategy, along with its neighbouring communities of Sherbrooke and Prince Charles. This strategy aims to create functional, self-contained and desirable communities, and became the prevalent development strategy in Edmonton during the following decades. The dominant housing type here is the single-family detached home. Dovercourt’s population is 2,115, with more than half owning their homes and a high number of longer-term residents.
Dovercourt’s location just northwest of downtown Edmonton allows for a quick commute, while the adjacent Yellowhead Trail connects residents with various industrial employment areas across Edmonton. At the centre of the community of Dovercourt, you’ll find the large Dovercourt Park offering numerous recreational opportunities, including a spray park, sports fields, playground, picnic areas, and skate ramps. Also located around the park are a community garden, Dovercourt Community League, and the Dovercourt School. Numerous churches can be found scattered throughout Dovercourt, as well as smaller “pocket” parks.
