Dechene is a community in west Edmonton, named after Joseph Miville Dechene, who was born in Quebec and moved to Alberta with his family in 1892. He was engaged in business and politics in Edmonton for more than four decades. The community’s boundaries are found at 184 Street to the west, Callingwood Road to the north, and Lessard Road to the east and south. Dechene was developed beginning in the 1980s and continuing slowly into the 2000s, and the majority of Dechene is made up of single-family detached homes, comprising nearly 90% of the real estate in the community. Duplexes make up most of the remaining residential units. The population of Dechene is 1,632, and the vast majority of residents own their homes.
Dechene’s location allows easy access to the nearby West Edmonton Mall, the Anthony Henday Drive ring road, and many other parts of south and west Edmonton via Whitemud Drive. Many commercial amenities, besides those at West Edmonton Mall, can be found at The Marketplace at Callingwood, located just north of Dechene. Here, you’ll find a Safeway, Liquor Depot, Shoppers Drug Mart, a farmer’s market, convenience, food, banks, and numerous other stores and services. There is also a small plaza within the south-west corner of Dechene, offering grocery, gas, food, coffee, and several other conveniences. A central park area, Dechene Park, is home to a playground, sports fields, and two schools; Good Shepherd Catholic School and S. Bruce Smith School. A Presbyterian church is located at Callingwood Road and 184 Street, with Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church across the street.
