Cumberland is named for Cumberland House, the first inland trading post of the Hudson’s Bay Company. Cumberland is part of The Palisades, within the Castledowns area. The community is bounded by 153 Avenue to the north, 127 Street to the east, Cumberland Road to the south, and the Rampart Industrial neighbourhood to the west around 142 Street. The Cumberland community is relatively new, with most of the homes being built after the 2000s. The real estate in Cumberland is 80% single-family detached homes, with the remainder split between row houses and condos. There is a small commercial centre at the north-east corner of Cumberland. Also nearby, in the Rampart Industrial neighbourhood, are the Victoria Soccer Club, Canadian Athletic Club, and Henry Singer Park, which has numerous sporting facilities. The commercial shopping area in the north-east corner of the neighbourhood offers a Save-On-Foods, Shoppers Drug Mart, food, coffee shops, and several other stores and services.
