Crawford Plains is a community in south-east Edmonton, within Mill Woods, named for the Honourable Neil Crawford in recognition of his service in municipal and provincial government. Neil Crawford was a member of the Edmonton Historical Board, served on City Council and was the MLA for Edmonton Parkallen. The community's boundaries are found at 50 Street to the west, 34 Street to the east, Mill Woods Road E and 16a Avenue to the north, and the Anthony Henday Drive ring road to the south. 12 Avenue bisects Crawford Plains and offers residents easy access to city bus services. Development in Crawford Plains began in the late 1970s and continued well into the 80s. Housing is made up of 75% single-detached homes with the remainder being low-rise apartments, row-housing, and a few duplexes scattered throughout. The population is 4,279, with the majority of Crawford Plains residents owning their homes.
Crawford Plains' location allows easy access to commercial employment opportunities at the nearby Mill Woods Town Centre and along 50 Street, access to many industrial employment areas throughout south and east Edmonton south via 50 and 34 Streets, and the Anthony Henday Drive ring road via 50 Street. Crawford Plains residents are served by businesses in the Crawford Plains Shopping Centre, which offers Discount Gas, the Asian Grocery Centre, Mill Woods Meat Shop, and places to eat. Further commercial amenities can be found a short drive away at Mill Woods Town Centre, which offers Co-op Foods, Shoppers Drug Mart, Millwoods Registry Services, multiple restaurants, banks and numerous other food, stores, and services. A branch of the Edmonton Public Library is located here. Many further commercial amenities can be found nearby at South Edmonton Common. The Grey Nuns Community Hospital is located north of Mill Woods Town Centre in the community of Tawa. In the heart of Crawford Plains, you'll find Crawford Plains Park, which offers residents a playground, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, a skating rink and Crawford Plains School, once the largest elementary school in Edmonton. The Mill Woods Cultural Society for the Retired and Semi-Retired, located in the community, provides English and citizenship classes, recreation facilities, and assistance for new immigrants.
