Central Edmonton is an area of Edmonton, comprised of areas such as Downtown, Oliver, Westmount, Kingsway, Blatchford, Inglewood, Alberta Avenue, McCauley, Glenora, Highlands, and Riverdale. The area is found roughly south of 118 Avenue and Yellowhead Trail, west of Wayne Gretzky Drive and 50 Street, north of the North Saskatchewan River, and east of Groat Road. Most communities in Central Edmonton began development as early as the later part of the 19th century, with a rich history of urbanization and redevelopment. Blatchford is the only newly developed community in Central Edmonton. It was once the City Centre Airport, until it was closed in 2013, making way for a new residentially-focused community. Housing throughout Central Edmonton is a true mix, with many low-, mid-, and high-rise apartment and condo buildings found in the most central communities especially. Other parts of Central Edmonton include many single-family detached homes, duplexes, fourplexes, and townhouses. The age of Central Edmonton real estate is also varied, ranging across 130+ years of Edmonton's history and including the very newest construction.
Central Edmonton's location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of Edmonton, beginning with the many amenities and landmarks within the area itself, but also connecting quickly to many surrounding areas, whether by road or transit. Grant MacEwan University and NAIT are located within Central Edmonton, while the University of Alberta is located a short commute south across the river. The Commonwealth Stadium and Rogers Place arena are both located within Central Edmonton as well. Central Edmonton residents are served by numerous large shopping centres: the City Centre Mall, Kingsway Mall, and the Oliver Square/Brewery District area, as well as Little Italy, greater Downtown, and many smaller convenience plazas scattered across Central Edmonton. These offer a full range of grocery, convenience, shopping, services, food, coffee, and more. Whyte Ave, located across the river, offers a historic shopping and entertainment district. There are numerous parks and green spaces dotted around Central Edmonton, as well as full access to the recreational opportunities in the North Saskatchewan River valley. The area also offers a wide variety of schools and churches.
